Motionwear Awards Mississppi Studio Cash Prize For "Why My Studio Rocks" Program

Motionwear, the Indianapolis-based dance apparel manufactuter, announces the winner for their "Why My Studio Rocks" program in effort to shine a spotlight on the winning studio. Motionwear acknowledged Turning Pointe Dance Academy in Corinth, Mississippi by awarding them a $500 cash prize.

Turning Pointe Dance Academy opened one year ago. In that time, studio owner Crystal Scarborough had taken girls who had never danced before into regional Showstopper winners. "I believe this happened because we are encouraged in a positive light," said the student who nominated her studio. Students say the studio has become their home. Every team member is always welcome to "claim a spot at the bar and work", even when its not his or her class time. Scarborough offers her time and money to teach, and buy shoes, and costumes for those who cannot.

TPDA now has two competition teams and fifty recreational students in just the first year alone. "Our studio is small, but it belongs to the dancers. Many of us consider this our safe place. There are no harsh words. I have seen littel girls come into the recreational classes so timid and shy that they would cry the first day. One little girl did just that three months ago, but by the time the performance came aorund, she beamed on stage. After the performance we were having pictures taken and her mother and grandmother came over to Mrs. Crystal and said "We have you one child, and you have given us back another. God bless you! We never thought it was possible for her to look so happy or confident!" says student Maurryn Bingham. Studio Owner, Scarborough replied "That was always there! She just needed to believe it!"

Bingham, who nominated her studio, said" "Not only has our studio brought ballet back to the life in our area, but it has helped the confidence in every girl inside as well. That's why my studio rocks!"

Bingham states "She finds what each of us excel at and builds out of that. Our studio is small, but it belongs to the dancers." Turning Pointe Dance Academy helps bring confidence to young dancers and teachers them the art of dance.

The "Why My Studio Rocks" program is a campaign to highlight one studio per year for their work and impact in the dance community. Studios and students submitted written essays detailing why their studio should win. Studios play an integral role in the life of a dancer. Motionwear realizes that the studio is the foundation of where the dancer's dreams come to life.

"As a father whose daughter danced her entire young adult life, there is no question that her experiences in the studio were the main reasons she loved the art and danced so long. We wanted to bring fun exposure to the winning studio and give back as well," says Charles M Pigh, VP Sales and Marketing.

Behrmann, a 15 year old, aspiring ballerina from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Olivia Behrmann attended public school in Washington Township through the first quarter of her 8th grade year, when she began her schooling online to accommodate her increasing number of hours spent training to become a professional ballerina.

When she was younger, Behrmann participated in soccer, gymnastics, and cheerleading. She tried her first dance class at Dance Creations in Fishers, Indiana at the age of 7 and was immediately hooked. She went on to do competitive dance for four years: three years with Dreamworks Dance Productions and one year with Dance Legacy.

Behrmann experienced much success in competition dance, but at the age of 12, she decided to leave the competition dance world behind to pursue classical ballet. She joined Central Indiana Academy of Dance (CIAD) in Carmel, Indiana, as well as Central Indiana Dance Ensemble (the pre-professional ballet company associated with CIAD).

For the past three years, has gained acceptance, often with scholarships, into a number of summer intensive programs, including Bolshoi Ballet Academy, Nashville Ballet, Joffrey Ballet (Chicago), Nutmeg Conservatory, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Ellison Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. In Summer of 2012, she attended Valentina Kozlova Dance Conservatory of New York on full scholarship. Behrmann is excited to attend the School of American Ballet summer course in NYC June 24th through July 26th.

Behrmann will be writing about her experiences as she attends the School of American Ballet summer course in NYC this summer.

Motionwear Spotlights Indianapolis Dancer, Michelle Meltzer

Motionwear spotlights Indianapolis, Indiana dancer, Michelle Meltzer for her dedication to the arts.

Meltzer, an Indianapolis native, has been dancing her entire life. “My mother enrolled me in my first dance class when I was three years old; however, I developed a deeper love and appreciation of dance much later on in my training” says Meltzer. Meltzer’s first professional experience working with a dance company was at nine years old, where she performed with Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre in Dracula.

She grew to love the modern style of the company and chose to focus primarily on modern dance until she was sixteen. “At around fifteen, I met one of the most influential mentors and teachers in my life, Victoria Lyras. Her wonderful staff of artists, including my teachers: Michelle Merrell and Kristin Hakala, inspired me each day to pursue a new dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer.”

Currently at Indiana University’s Ballet Department, Meltzer says being accepted has been a pivotal stepping-stone in her career. “Working with Violette Verdy has been the greatest gift I could ask for. Her watchful eye and delicate attention to detail has inspired me to narrow my focus and refine my technique. She gives her life to her students, myself included, caring more about the soul within over the dancer without.”

Meltzer plans to dance professionally in a ballet company and continue to work hard and expand her dancing range until she retires. She also plans to continue teaching ballet and giving back to the community. Meltzer said some of the best advice she’s been given is “You can do everything you need to do, as well as what you choose to do, just not all at once.”

“I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Experiences in my life, whether good or bad, have taught me valuable lessons that I continue to carry with me,” says Meltzer in response to the ability
to do something over in her career.

Our earth is precious, and Motionwear believes we all need to make an effort to protect it. We have recently made company-wide efforts and will regularly look at improvement initiatives to lower our carbon footprint. Here are a few things we are doing to be kinder to our environment:

Reduction of waste:

  • We re-engineered processes in our cutting operations reducing overall trash weight by 30%; that's 10,000 pounds per year!
  • Invested in new software to optimize fabric use reducing waste by 4%; a reduction of over 15,000 pounds per year!

Minimize overall electrical usage:

  • Installed new fresh air intake systems to reduce electricity used for climate control.
  • Upgrading machine motors to increase electrical efficiencies.

Reuse, recycle and reduce. We have implemented the 3 R's initiative from the board room to the loading dock. At Motionwear, we're working every day to bring you the best - and environmentally friendly, dance, gymnastics, cheer and team apparel.
